A LEGACY OF MAGIC

by Going Fine Since 1889: The Magical Armstrongs

Going Fine Since 1889: The Magical Armstrongs is a documentary in preproduction about a family of African American magicians traveling throughout the South in the early 1900’s within the confines of the Jim Crow era.

The film is seeking donations to help with production costs for archival materials, the creation of a historic marker, interviews, animated sequences, and music.

Your contribution will help keep the history of magic alive and provide for the development of an important family historical account and legacy than needs to not only be explored but shared!

Much of the lore and history of the Armstrongs is a mystery, and this is what this documentary seeks to explore. The Armstrongs' traveled extensively, performed to great crowds and were incredibly successful.  Their determination and level of accomplishment is stunning, considering the times.  The film seeks to piece together the story of the Armstrongs through movies, historical documentation, and most importantly, African American magicians who carry on this important, yet not yet fully explored, legacy.

This is a documentary that, in essence, seeks to elucidate the life and times of illusionist John Hartford Armstrong, his wife Lillie Belle and daughter Ellen E. Armstrong.  While America pivoted into the Modern Century, a time when society and entertainment were changing rapidly, the Armstrong’s brought a sophistication and highly refined grandeur to the world of magic, carried on to this day, however, they are virtually forgotten.
